More than a visit

AHEAD’s work in Tanzania began in 1974. What started as a commitment to improving health and opportunity has grown into decades of collaboration across health, education, agriculture, youth development, and community infrastructure.

Today, AHEAD works closely with AHEAD Tanzania and local partners in the Kagera Region, including health professionals, schools, community leaders, and government institutions.

AHEAD volunteers and staff in Tanzania

When you travel with AHEAD, you are not arriving to create a short-term project. You are joining work that already exists and relationships that continue throughout the year. You will meet the people who lead these programs, learn from their experience, and take part where your skills and time can be useful.

Service grounded in partnership. Learning grounded in community.

Why travel with AHEAD

There are many ways to visit Tanzania. Traveling with AHEAD offers something different.

You experience the country through relationships built over decades. You spend time with Tanzanian professionals, educators, students, families, and community partners who know AHEAD and help shape its programs. You see how health, education, nutrition, technology, youth development, and sustainable infrastructure connect in everyday life. And you have the opportunity to contribute to work designed to continue long after the trip ends.

No particular professional background is required. AHEAD welcomes adults, students, professionals, retirees, and families who are prepared to participate respectfully and learn alongside the communities they visit. Participants under 18 must travel with a parent or guardian.

How you will take part

Your experience will depend in part on your background, interests, and the programs taking place during the 2027 visit. Healthcare professionals may support appropriate health or dental activities alongside Tanzanian clinicians. Educators, technology professionals, coaches, students, and other volunteers may participate in school, youth, sports, computer, or community programs. Other participants may contribute through program support, logistics, documentation, communications, or other activities identified by AHEAD and its Tanzanian partners.

The goal is not to find a task for every visitor simply for the sake of volunteering. The goal is to contribute where participation is useful, appropriate, and aligned with locally identified needs.

  • School exchange. Join lessons and a shared project with students and teachers at Maruku and Bukara Secondary Schools.
  • Health education. Support sessions on nutrition, oral health and hygiene led by the Health Ambassadors.
  • Community Health Fair. Help at health education stations. Licensed clinicians can ask us about serving in their professional role.
  • Youth sports camp. Coach or cheer alongside Pazi Basketball Tanzania.
  • Culture and history. Swahili, music, food and the history of Kagera.

VOICES FROM THE AHEAD JOURNEY

Some experiences stay with you long after you return home.

For decades, volunteers have returned from Tanzania carrying memories of the people, relationships, and experiences they encountered there. These reflections are part of AHEAD’s history.

“I learned that I have more endurance and fewer limitations than I assumed. The experience gave me the courage and inspiration I needed to fulfill my goals.”
Anastasia RolandAHEAD volunteer
“I see my trip to Tanzania as only the beginning of my travels to the continent of Africa. This trip set the stage, a launching pad from which I will nurture my relationship with Africa. I cannot thank AHEAD and Mrs. Williams enough for giving me this opportunity.”
Ayanna GregoryAHEAD volunteer, daughter of Dick Gregory
“The AHEAD staff are a dedicated group of people, and I felt honored working with them on health issues in Tanzania. Seeing the dedication of the health workers confirmed my decision to practice medicine. I learned a lot about Africa, Tanzania and myself. I believe I changed and grew, and I am a better person because of it.”
Lisa MooreAHEAD volunteer, Benedictine College

Responsible service

AHEAD believes that meaningful international service begins with respect. Programs are developed with Tanzanian partners and are based on priorities identified by the people and institutions involved in the work.

Participants are expected to listen before acting, respect local leadership, and work within the responsibilities appropriate to their skills and professional qualifications. Visiting volunteers do not replace Tanzanian professionals or create parallel programs that disappear when the trip ends. Instead, the journey is designed to support existing work, exchange knowledge where appropriate, and strengthen relationships between AHEAD, AHEAD Tanzania, and the communities with which they work.

Photography and storytelling should also be approached with respect. The people participants meet are partners, professionals, students, families, and community members, not simply subjects of a volunteer experience. That principle guides the entire journey.

Community health training

How we serve

  • Patient care is provided only by licensed clinicians, within their scope and with local approval.
  • No orphanage visits.
  • Photographs of children only with parental consent.
  • Local staff, drivers, interpreters and teachers are paid fairly for their work.
  • Any recreational travel is separate from the program.
  • AHEAD Tanzania and partner schools help plan each program.

Who can join?

AHEAD welcomes people from many backgrounds and stages of life. You do not need to be a physician or healthcare professional to participate.

Previous and prospective participants include healthcare professionals, educators, students, technology professionals, coaches, community leaders, retirees, families, and others who share an interest in AHEAD’s work. Some activities require specific professional training or credentials. Other activities are open to a broader range of participants.

Before the trip, AHEAD will work with participants to identify the most appropriate ways for them to take part. This is not a competitive selection process — AHEAD matches each participant’s time, skills and interests to where they are genuinely useful.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to work in healthcare to join?

No. AHEAD welcomes participants from a range of professional and personal backgrounds. Some clinical activities are limited to appropriately licensed professionals, but the broader program includes opportunities connected with education, youth activities, technology, community programs, logistics, and other areas.

Is this primarily a medical mission?

No. Health is an important part of AHEAD’s work, but the organization’s programs also include education, technology, youth development, nutrition, sustainability, and community infrastructure.

Will I be volunteering every day?

No. The journey combines scheduled program activities with learning, cultural experiences, travel, relationship-building, and time to better understand the communities and organizations involved.

How will my volunteer activities be determined?

Activities are based on the needs of AHEAD’s Tanzanian partners, the programs scheduled during the visit, and each participant’s skills and experience.

Can families participate?

Yes. Families may participate, although participants under 18 must travel with a parent or guardian. Activities will be assigned according to age and suitability.

What is included in the program fee?

The program fee covers the in-country services listed above. International airfare and other specifically excluded expenses are the responsibility of each participant.

Do I need a visa?

Most participants will need a Tanzania visa. Tanzania visas are generally available no more than six weeks before travel, and approval typically takes about one week, so plan to apply inside that window rather than far in advance. A full checklist is provided on acceptance, and participants should also check current Tanzanian visa requirements and CDC travel guidance for their own nationality.

What transfers or travel do I need to arrange myself?

Participants book and arrange their own international flights to and from Tanzania. Once you land, AHEAD arranges the program’s airport pickup and drop-off and all ground transportation within Tanzania, so there is no separate local transfer to prepare beyond getting yourself to the airport on the scheduled arrival day.

What should I expect before departure?

Registered participants will receive information about travel arrangements, documentation, health preparations, packing, program expectations, and the planned itinerary before departure.

What makes traveling with AHEAD different?

AHEAD has worked in Tanzania since 1974. Participants are entering relationships and programs that have developed over decades rather than joining a stand-alone short-term project.

Come see what partnership looks like

For more than five decades, AHEAD has built relationships around a simple idea: lasting progress is created with communities, not for them. The Journey of Purpose is an opportunity to experience those relationships firsthand.

You will come to Tanzania to contribute. You will also come to listen, learn, share, and connect. And you may return home with a different understanding of what service can mean.
