AHEAD Brings Physicians, Dentists, Surgeons, and Nurses to the Rural Tanzanian Communities That Need Them Most.
In rural Tanzania, a mother can die in childbirth from a complication that is entirely treatable — simply because there is no doctor within reach. AHEAD closes that gap by funding health infrastructure, running annual health fairs, deploying volunteer medical teams, and building the systems that keep communities healthy long after our volunteers fly home.
AHEAD’s Impact on Health in a Rural District at Maruku Health Center
When Dr. William arrived in Tanzania in 1974, there was only ONE pediatrician in the entire country. Now it has a network of physicians, dentists, surgeons, and nurses serving thousands every year. The mission has never changed, but it’s scaling every year.
In Rural Tanzania, the Distance Between a Patient and a Doctor Can Be the Distance Between Life and Death
Tanzania has made significant progress in public health over recent decades. But in rural districts like Bukoba, the statistics still tell a painful story. The maternal mortality rate stands at 276 deaths per 100,000 live births. Infant mortality sits at 31.87 deaths per 1,000 live births. Behind every one of those numbers is a family… a mother who did not have to die, a child who should have survived.
The Lack Of Health Care Is Not Tanzanian’s Fault
The causes are not mysterious. They are structural. In Maruku and the surrounding villages, families must travel long distances over rough roads to reach a hospital. Emergency transport barely exists. Trained specialists (surgeons, dentists, orthopedic doctors) are concentrated in cities, out of reach for rural communities. The Maruku Health Center serves the entire surrounding district, yet for years it had no cesarean capability, no reliable power for surgeries, and no ultrasound technology — and previously operated with minimal staff and limited clinical capacity.
And dental care? No one is aware that oral diseases are linked to diabetes, heart problems, and stroke, etc. So people in rural Bukoba visit a dentist only when the pain becomes unbearable.
AHEAD has worked in rural communities such as Maruku for over five decades because the gap is real and the need is urgent. But we know that with the right partnerships, it is solvable.
AHEAD’s Four Most Crucial Health Programs In Rural Tanzania For Communities That Deserve the Best Care
We’re not the ones who send medicine or kits to patients. We build a sustainable health system and infrastructure that addresses and eradicates health issues at their root. These four programs are the core of what we do in the health sector.
Maruku Health Center – Maternal & Primary Care
Building a Health Center Where Safe Childbirth Is Possible
Over the decades, AHEAD has developed the Maruku Health Center into a functioning maternal and primary care facility serving the wider district. The center now includes maternal wards, a pediatric unit, ultrasound technology, and modern surgical equipment.
In August 2023, the first cesarean section was performed… a major milestone in emergency care. In 2024, solar power and a generator provided reliable energy for operations.
✔ First C-section performed (2023)
✔ Solar-powered surgical capability (2024)
✔ Maternal and pediatric care infrastructure
Community Health Fairs — Specialized Care Access
Bringing Specialized Medical Care Directly to Rural Communities
Each July, AHEAD brings a multidisciplinary team of volunteer professionals to Maruku Health Center for a three-day health fair. Over three years, 2,050+ patients have received treatment across medical and dental disciplines.
The 2025 fair treated 700 patients in three days, covering women’s health, pediatrics, internal medicine, orthopedics, and more. Volunteers self-fund their participation, strengthening the program’s reach and sustainability.
✔ 2,050+ patients treated across three years
✔ 700 patients served in 2025
✔ Multidisciplinary medical and dental care
Oral Health & Dental Program
Preventing Disease by Addressing Oral Health Early
In rural Tanzania, dental care is often delayed until conditions become severe. AHEAD’s program brings licensed dentists to provide treatment and education annually.
Services include extractions, fillings, cleanings, x-rays, and hygiene education. In 2025, hundreds of patients were treated with support from international volunteers and partners.
AHEAD is now fundraising to build a permanent dental facility at Maruku Health Center, expanding access to preventive care.
✔ Annual dental camps and treatments
✔ Oral health education for long-term prevention
✔ Dental office renovation in progress
Wogo — Joint Replacement Surgeries
Restoring Mobility Through Life-Changing Surgical Access
AHEAD partners with WOGO to connect patients in Maruku with joint replacement surgeries performed in Arusha. These procedures remain inaccessible to most rural patients without logistical and financial support.
In 2025, 39 surgeries were completed, including five Maruku patients transported over 361 miles with full support from AHEAD.

✔ Travel, testing, and coordination fully funded

From Life-or-Death Risk to Standard Care
Naeema’s story is no longer exceptional. Since AHEAD equipped the Maruku Health Center with ultrasound technology, surgical equipment, and solar-powered operating facilities, and since the first cesarean section was performed in August 2023, hundreds of mothers have received emergency obstetric care that did not exist before.
The same shift is happening across all programs. Three years ago, no patient in Maruku had received dental care from a licensed dentist. Today, hundreds receive treatment every summer, with plans underway for a permanent dental clinic.
Access to Care Has Already Changed Outcomes Across Maruku
Access to healthcare has changed what survival looks like in Maruku. What were once life-threatening situations are now treatable … because the right systems are in place.
Emergency Care That Saves Lives
When AHEAD arrived in Maruku, there were no basic maternal care facilities. The nearest hospital is 45 minutes away, which is a fatal distance for a mother in labor.
Because of that 100s of mothers every year were suffering. So we established Maruku Health Center, which provided mandatory health care to mothers.
Expanding Access Across Every Health Program
At the same time, expanded services, including diagnostics, surgical care, and maternal health services, have significantly increased the number of patients treated at the center in recent years.
Similarly, patients with disabling joint pain had no path to surgery. In 2025, AHEAD supported five Maruku patients in traveling to Arusha for treatment.
AHEAD Impact is Scaling Every Year
Over 1,000,000 people have been impacted by AHEAD’s work in Tanzania for over 52 years. Every number represents someone who received care — not by chance, but because access was made possible.

Questions We Hear Most Often
Where exactly does my donation go?
100% of donations to AHEAD’s Health programs are directed to program costs in Tanzania — medical supplies, equipment, surgical support, dental renovation, Health Fair logistics, and patient transport. AHEAD operates lean to maximize every dollar.
Who are the volunteers at the health fairs? Are they qualified professionals?
Yes. Every international volunteer at the Maruku Community Health Fair is a licensed professional: physicians, surgeons, dentists, dental hygienists, nurses, and medical specialists. They include the New York Relief Mission nurses, WOGO orthopedic surgeons, and US-based dentists and doctors — all of whom self-finance their travel to Tanzania.
What is the current status of the dental office renovation?
AHEAD is actively fundraising for the renovation of a dedicated dental office at the Maruku Health Center. The total project cost is $66,625, covering construction, equipment, and dental supplies. Once complete, 875 students from Maruku Secondary School and neighboring schools will receive dental care twice a year. Your donation directly accelerates this.
What is the WOGO partnership and how does it work?
WOGO (Women Orthopaedist Global Outreach) is a network of orthopedic surgeons who travel the world performing joint replacement surgeries. In Tanzania, they operate at Arusha Lutheran Medical Center. AHEAD’s role is to identify Maruku patients who need surgery, fund their 361-mile journey to Arusha, cover pre-operative testing costs, and provide a dedicated patient liaison throughout the process.
Is AHEAD a registered nonprofit? Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. AHEAD Inc. is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit based in Rockville, Maryland. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. You will receive a receipt for your records.
I am a doctor, dentist, or nurse. Can I volunteer at the Health Fair?
