AHEAD Hosts Second Annual Soccer Camp in Maruku, Tanzania — Advancing Youth Empowerment Through Sport, Health & Education

From July 14–17, 2025, AHEAD, Inc. of Rockville, Maryland, in partnership with its sister organization AHEAD Tanzania, proudly hosted the second annual soccer camp at Maruku Secondary School in Maruku, Tanzania. This inspiring event brought together AHEAD, its volunteers, Maruku Secondary School’s girl and boy campers, teachers, and parents in a dynamic celebration of sport, health, and education. Coach Mayla Hirshkowitz (her second year leading this effort as an AHEAD volunteer coach) and Coach Brooke Tucker were exceptional in their delivery of a great camps centered on fun, skill development, and teamwork to camp participants.

Held alongside a simultaneous basketball camp, the event reflected AHEAD’s growing commitment to youth development through integrated approaches that connect physical activity, health education, healthy lifestyles, and leadership training.

More than just a week of play, the soccer and basketball camps mark a major step forward in AHEAD’s long-term mission to promote community health and education. They also served as a launchpad for the upcoming Health Ambassadors Program, set to begin in 2026, which will empower young people to serve as peer leaders and advocates for health and wellness in their communities while working to preclude disparities in health and education.

Equipment Donation Builds Long-Term Impact

Thanks to the support of generous volunteers and donors, AHEAD delivered over 350 pounds of sports and physical education equipment to Maruku Secondary School. The donation included:

  • Soccer balls and portable soccer goals
  • Basketballs and volleyballs
  • Volleyball posts and nets
  • Over 100 pairs of brand-new cleats and basketball shoes
  • And much more

This vital equipment will strengthen the school’s physical education program long after the camp ends—giving students the opportunity to stay active, healthy, and engaged throughout the school year.

Investing in Youth, Investing in the Future

The second annual soccer camp stands as a powerful example of how sport can be used as a tool for empowerment, education, and positive change. By creating inclusive spaces where young people can grow, learn, and lead, AHEAD continues to invest in a brighter future for Tanzanian youth and their communities.

As preparations begin for 2026 and the launch of new health and education initiatives, AHEAD remains dedicated to its mission: strengthening communities through grassroots action, meaningful partnerships, and youth-centered development.
