52 Years Ago, a Pediatrician Moved His Family to Tanzania. AHEAD Is What He Built.
AHEAD Inc. is a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit partnering with rural communities in Tanzania to deliver health, education, and sustainable development — built to last.
AHEAD, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Dr. Irving and Elvira Williams ( affectionately known as Mama and Baba Williams). AHEAD has spent over five decades building healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to education, and installing sustainable energy and clean water systems across rural Tanzania. Today, over 1,000,000 people across Tanzania and beyond have been touched by the work that began with one family’s decision to stay.

The Story That Started Everything
In 1974, Dr. Irving Williams, a pediatrician, and Mrs. Elvira Williams, an educator, moved their family of six to Mwanza, Tanzania. At that time, the entire country had just ONE pediatrician. What was meant to be a two-year commitment became a lifelong calling. The communities they served called them Mama and Baba Williams, a name that reflects decades of trust, return visits, and genuine partnership.
In 1981, they founded AHEAD, Inc., Adventures in Health, Education, and Agricultural Development, with the conviction that sustainable community well-being requires all three dimensions working together. They were photographed with Tanzania’s founding president, Julius Nyerere. Dr. Williams received the World of Children Award, often called the Nobel Prize for child advocates. Dr. Williams received the Ashden Trust Award, presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, for AHEAD’s contributions to sustainable environmental development.
“Good health requires good nutrition. Good nutrition requires good agriculture. And education is the vehicle that provides sustainability.”
— Dr. Irving C. Williams, MD — Founder, AHEAD Inc.

What We Believe and Why We Do This Work
AHEAD has a mission to accomplish and a vision to follow.
Our Mission
To partner with underserved communities in developing countries to build sustainable systems in health, education, and agriculture — so people can thrive long after aid ends.
Our Vision
A world where your geography does not determine your access to healthcare, education, or a dignified life. Where communities have the infrastructure, knowledge, and leadership to sustain their well-being across generations.
Our Values
- Community partnership over top-down aid
- Sustainable infrastructure over temporary relief
- Long-term presence over short-term visits
- Co-learning with the people we serve
- Dignity, equity, and cultural respect in everything we do

Why AHEAD Deserves Your Attention and Trust
There are thousands of nonprofits working in global health and education. Here is what makes AHEAD different — and why it matters to anyone considering where to direct their time, expertise, and funding.
52 Years of Unbroken Presence
AHEAD has moved from different communities in Tanzania. We started out in Shinyanga Rural, then Meatu, and Kisarawe Districts, and since 2017, we have extended AHEAD programs to Bukoba Rural District. AHEAD has not moved from community to community chasing impact metrics. We have been working in rural villages in Tanzania for over four decades. AHEAD has built trust and relationships so strong that otherwise take a generation to build. This is not charity tourism, it is a long-term community investment.
Infrastructure That Lasts
AHEAD does not send supply kits and leave. We install solar panels that power operating rooms. We build computer labs that the Tanzanian government recognizes and co-funds. We train Youth Health Ambassadors and community health workers (CHW) who carry knowledge into their communities long after our volunteers fly home. Every dollar given to AHEAD builds something permanent.
World-Class Leadership With Deep Personal Roots
Our CEO knows the problem and hardships of Tanzanian people. Our Medical Director performed the first solar-powered surgery at Maruku Health Center. Our Tanzania co-founder is a former WHO Assistant Director-General from the very village we serve. This is not a leadership team with a passing interest in global health. It is a team for whom this work is personal.
