Bridging the Digital Divide in Rural Tanzania

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Since 1981, AHEAD has supported education in rural Tanzania through scholarships, infrastructure, and essential learning resources. In 2023, we launched the AHEAD Computer Project for Youth at Maruku Secondary School, installing 25 Dell desktops and broadband internet access—connecting nearly 1,000 students to digital learning for the first time.
In July 2025, AHEAD CEO Dr. Donna Ngirwa and Medical Director Dr. Andrea Williams-Kingslow delivered 36 Lenovo laptops, donated by a dedicated supporter—further expanding the program’s reach and impact.
REAL IMPACT. MEASURABLE RESULTS.
- 61+ computers delivered and actively in use
- Fully equipped computer lab and secure infrastructure
- Reliable broadband internet established
- Increased student attendance and engagement, especially among girls
- Teacher training on digital tools and online resources
- New Computer Science & Repair Building under construction (completion: September 2025)
SCALING FORWARD: 2025–2027
To build on this momentum, AHEAD is expanding the program across the Maruku district and beyond. Our next-phase goals include:
- Delivering 50–100 additional laptops to the Maruku school district by Summer 2026
- Launching a student-led computer repair program
- Providing 800 more laptops to rural Bukoba schools by Summer 2027
- Training local teachers to become certified IT instructors
- Establishing a regional tech repair hub at Maruku Secondary School
This model not only increases access but creates long-term sustainability and employment opportunities in tech.
WHY IT MATTERS
In rural Tanzanian communities, students face systemic barriers to education—poverty, food insecurity, and gender inequity among them. Digital access changes the narrative.
