AHEAD and PAZI Basketball Partner to Launch Transformative Youth Sports and Health Initiative in Rural Tanzania
Maruku, Tanzania – July 14, 2025
AHEAD, Inc., in partnership with Tanzania’s grassroots club PAZI Basketball, has launched a groundbreaking initiative focused on youth development through health, education, and sport. This collaboration officially began with the inaugural AHEAD-Maruku Secondary School Sports Camp, held from July 14 to July 17, hosted on the new FIFA-regulation basketball court at Maruku Secondary School—the first of its kind in the region.
The event marks a major step forward in AHEAD’s long-term mission to promote community health and education, serving as the launchpad for the upcoming Health Ambassadors Program in 2026.
Health, Education, and Infrastructure Come Together
Before a single whistle blew, the foundation for success was laid through infrastructure and resources. Thanks to generous volunteer support, AHEAD delivered over 350 pounds of sports and physical education equipment to Maruku Secondary School. The donation included basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, volleyball posts, full-size goals, nets, socks, shirts, and more than 100 pairs of new basketball shoes and cleats.
This vital equipment will empower the school’s physical education program long after the camp ends—providing students the opportunity to stay active, healthy, and engaged throughout the year.

Coaching Leadership from Tanzania and the U.S.
Throughout the four-day camp, more than 80 students received professional basketball training, mentorship, and leadership development. PAZI Basketball brought four long-tenured coaches from Dar Es Salaam and Mwanza, while U.S.-based Coach Carl Mayfield and his son Cam Mayfield joined the team to support on-court instruction.
The camp blended athletic development with core life values such as teamwork, discipline, and mutual respect—contributing to the students’ growth both on and off the court.

Gouda Moses, PAZI Basketball Board Member:
“We are thrilled to partner with AHEAD and the exciting work they continue to advance in rural Tanzania improving lives in health, education, and agriculture. PAZI sees basketball as a vehicle for opportunity, youth development, and healthy outlets for boys and girls in Tanzania. AHEAD’s work in Maruku will make a difference in the lives of thousands of students and the surrounding community.”
Building Toward the Health Ambassadors Program
The Sports Camp is just the beginning. In 2026, AHEAD will launch its Health Ambassadors Program, aimed at training Tanzanian secondary school students to become peer leaders in health education, hygiene, nutrition, and youth advocacy.
The program builds on the foundation of the sports camp by linking physical activity with long-term public health impact, equipping students to become agents of change in their schools and communities.

AHEAD Representative:
“We’re building more than sports infrastructure. We’re building safe, inclusive spaces where young people can grow into leaders—in health, in school, and in life. Our partnership with PAZI shows how grassroots collaboration creates lasting change.”
Looking Ahead
The AHEAD-Maruku Sports Camp stands as a model for what’s possible when community organizations, schools, and international partners work together. With new infrastructure, energized educators, and empowered students, the Maruku community now has a living platform for health, education, and youth leadership.
Stay tuned as AHEAD and PAZI continue to scale their impact—and prepare for the launch of the Health Ambassadors Program in 2026.
