Celebrating 50 Years of AHEAD, Inc.!

Hello *{{Name}}*,

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, we are celebrating 50 years of AHEAD, Inc.! In July of 1974, Dr. Irving Williams and his wife Elvira, along with their four children, traveled to Tanzania for the first time. With an invitation from The Tanzanian Ministry of Health and H.E. Julius K. Nyerere (former President of Tanzania), they set out on a mission to work in the country as a pediatrician and educator. Little did they realize that this mission would become their life's work and passion to this very day - thus, AHEAD, Inc. was created. In addition to increasing maternal and child health care access, disease prevention initiatives, and higher immunization rates, they have also expanded their efforts to include oral health care, agricultural and environmental projects, education, infrastructure development, and providing additional resources to communities in the rural areas of Tanzania and The Gambia.

Since its inception, AHEAD, Inc. has succeeded in bringing life-sustaining programs to the most
remote and resource-scarce areas of Africa. These locations include the Shinyanga Region,
Coast Region, and Bukoba District in the Kagera Region, as well as The Gambia. These rural
areas have been hardest hit by epidemics and have been traditionally avoided by many
organizations that choose instead to focus their work in African cities. AHEAD has made it a
priority to reach these remote areas that are often inaccessible due to lack of roads and other
treacherous conditions.

AHEAD has relied on the generosity of individual volunteers (including professionals and college
students) as well as organizations to decrease infant, child, and maternal mortality rates, provide
immunizations for millions of children (Fact: Major health accomplishment: AHEAD was successful
in raising the immunization rate for children under five from 27% to 98% in the Shinyanga region),
reduce the incidence of malnutrition in the Meatu District from 20% to 2% among children 5
years or younger, improve pre/postnatal care rates for women from 4% to 70%, provide dental
care, foster programs for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, build dormitories for girls at
secondary schools, award 1600 scholarships for boys and girls to attend secondary and
vocational schools, and supply mechanisms to pasteurize contaminated water in order to prevent
diarrheal diseases. AHEAD has also successfully installed solar systems to provide electricity in
health facilities and schools. Initiatives are implemented at community level to ensure
sustainable impact. It is Dr. Irving and Elvira Williams’ primary goal to enable self-sustaining
systems to make long-term change through their initiatives within the local communities. You will
be pleased to know that 94% of our proceeds go directly to the care of women and children.

Dr. Williams has received numerous honors and awards, including The Cardinal Health
Children’s Care Award from World of Children, Inc., for his tireless dedication to helping
over 1.5 million children in the United States, Tanzania, and The Gambia. AHEAD, Inc. has
also received accolades from UNICEF for providing outstanding primary health services in
Tanzania.

It is AHEAD, Inc.’s goal to provide its target locations in Africa with the tools, resources, and
services needed for people to flourish and become self-sufficient. We couldn’t have done it
without the incredible work of those involved, and we encourage you to join us in our
philanthropic efforts to make the world a better place for everyone. Please consider donating to our cause by clicking the link below:
