Our Mission, Goals & Accomplishments

Adventures in Health, Education, and Agricultural Development (AHEAD) Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose mission is to work with underserved communities in developing countries to improve the quality of life for orphans and other vulnerable children, women and youth by implementing sustainable programs that lead to self-sufficiency and self-reliance.

The goals of the AHEAD are:

  • to reduce and eliminate disease and premature death
  • to cultivate and advance healthy living
  • to foster sustainable environmental activities

AHEAD carefully creates and implements projects at the grass-roots level, involving villagers in all aspects of program planning, training, implementation, and evaluation.

AHEAD presently has programs in Tanzania and The Gambia, where malaria, malnutrition and diarrheal diseases remain the primary causes of death among infants and children, and where maternal and fetal mortality rate is malignant and among the worst in the world. Health facilities are often inaccessible, or when available, understaffed and sorely ill-equipped to handle the many needs facing communities.

AHEAD gives priority to child survival and safe motherhood programs that focus on HIV/AIDS and STD prevention; prevention of childhood diseases, including malaria, measles, tuberculosis, polio, diarrheal diseases, and nutrition interventions for malnourished and undernourished children; teen pregnancy prevention; pre- and postnatal care; child spacing; environmental health; youth development; health care capacity building; and education.

AHEAD has earned accolades from UNICEF for its' effective primary health care services which have resulted in an exponential improvement in immunization rates in AHEAD targeted villages via AHEAD's Mobile Health Outreach Programs, which has been established in over 35 villages.  In these villages immunization coverage of children improved form less than 27% to 98% for complete coverage of children five years and under.

AHEAD successfully embarked on our Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery Program in 2007.  With our team of committed and dedicated health care professionals, AHEAD is repairing cleft lip and palate deformities and dental deformities of children and youth in Tanzania, dramatically changing the lives of each patient and their family. Today, AHEAD has successful reconstructed and repaired scores of young people suffering from this and other functional and physical defects, while developing a solid foundation and conduit for future successes for other Tanzanias and their families in need of similar surgical interventions.

AHEAD has a fundamental belief that an educated populus will insure communal self determination.  With that, we provide educational opportunities for young people, to assure that they have a chance to compete in today's global community.  Our programs include scholarships for secondary school education, nursing, and vocational education.  AHEAD has also established our own vocational education and living center with exciting and readily applicable programming in carpentry, computer science, electronics & electrical installation, agriculture, horticulture, communal farming, & solar voltaic systems in an on-campus living-learning community.
